Should You Consult an Astrologer Before a Big Decision?

Sometimes yes, often no, and never as a substitute for doing your homework. An honest guide to when a consultation actually adds something.

Should You Consult an Astrologer Before a Big Decision?

People usually come to me at a crossroads: a job offer in another city, a proposal of marriage, a property that has to be decided on by Friday. They want to know whether to consult an astrologer, and sometimes, I suspect, they want permission not to.

My honest answer is that a consultation can be genuinely useful before a big decision, but only for certain kinds of question, and only if you have already done the ordinary work of deciding.

What a consultation can add

Jyotish is good at two things. The first is perspective on timing. Your birth chart is read through dashas, long planetary periods that colour different phases of life, and through gochara, the transits of the grahas over the chart. An astrologer can tell you whether a period is traditionally associated with expansion or consolidation, with movement or with settling. That is not a forecast of events. It is a description of the weather you are likely to be working in.

The second is reflection. A good reading names tendencies you may already half recognise: a habit of overcommitting, a pull towards security over risk. Hearing them described in a structured way can help you see your own decision more clearly. Many clients tell me the most valuable thing was not anything I said, but the question they found themselves asking on the way home.

What it cannot do

It cannot tell you whether a particular company will treat you well, whether a property's title is clean, or whether the person you are marrying is kind. Those are matters of evidence. A chart is not due diligence, and an astrologer who offers to replace it is overstepping.

It also cannot remove the decision from you. If you go into a consultation hoping to be told what to do, you will either be disappointed or, worse, you will be told, and you will have given away something that was yours.

A chart can describe the weather you are working in; it cannot choose the road for you.

A simple test

Before booking, write down the decision in one sentence, then list the practical facts you have gathered and the ones you still need. If the second list is long, deal with it first. Speak to the lawyer, the financial adviser, the doctor, the family. Vedic guidance is complementary to professional advice and never a substitute for it.

If, having done that, you find yourself with two reasonable options and a question about timing or temperament, a consultation may help. It is particularly useful for choosing a muhurat, an auspicious moment, for something you have already decided to do: a griha pravesh, a wedding, the launch of a business. Here astrology works on the how and when, not the whether.

If instead you feel anxious and want reassurance, be honest with yourself about that. A consultation can calm you, but it will not settle a question you have not yet thought through, and a careful astrologer will tell you so.

So, before a big decision: gather the facts, sleep on them, and then decide whether timing is genuinely the open question. If it is, bring your one-sentence summary and your list to the session. A practitioner can then work with what you actually need rather than with your worry.

Vedic counsel and ritual are traditional and complementary practices — they sit alongside professional medical, legal and financial advice, never as a substitute for it.
